How to Edit PSD Files Online
Last updated October 2026 · 5-minute read
What you need
- A PSD file on your device
- A modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari
- Nothing to install or sign up for
Step 1 — Open the editor
Go to the online editor. The editor loads in your browser tab — no plugin, no extension.
When the editor is ready you will see a blank canvas with a toolbar on the left, a layers panel on the right, and an options bar at the top.
Step 2 — Open your PSD file
There are two ways to open a PSD:
- Drag and drop — drag the file from your desktop or file manager directly onto the editor window.
- File menu — click File → Open in the top menu bar and select your PSD from the file picker.
The file is read locally. Nothing is uploaded to a server at this step.
Step 3 — Work with the layer stack
Once the PSD opens, the layers panel on the right shows every layer from the file — pixel layers, text layers, groups, and adjustment layers. Click a layer to select it.
Common things you can do right away:
- Double-click a text layer to edit the text
- Click the eye icon next to a layer to toggle visibility
- Drag layers up or down to reorder them
- Click the adjustment layer icon to modify its settings non-destructively
- Use the Move tool (V) to reposition a layer
Step 4 — Make your edits
The full tool set is available: brush, eraser, clone stamp, crop, healing brush, selection tools, and filters. Some tools modify pixels directly. Duplicate the layer first and keep your original file.
Use Edit → Undo (Ctrl+Z on Windows, Cmd+Z on macOS) to step back through your changes. The history panel shows the full change log for the session.
Step 5 — Export
When you are done, go to File → Export. You can choose:
- File → Save As → PSD — saves back to Photoshop format with layers intact. Open this in Photoshop, Photopea, or PhotoCraft later.
- Export as PNG — lossless, with transparency preserved. Good for web use.
- Export as JPG — compressed, no transparency. Choose quality between 1–100.
- Export as WebP — good compression with optional transparency.
The file is written directly to your device. Nothing is sent to a server during export.
Known limitations
- Smart objects may render differently depending on embedded content and supported transforms. Verify the result.
- 3D layers and video layers are not supported.
- Camera RAW smart filters are applied and flattened on open.
- Fonts — if a text layer uses a font not available in your browser, an available bundled font may be substituted. Browser font availability differs from installed desktop fonts.
