Remove a background with selections and masks

Hosted AI background removal is not enabled on this site. You can isolate a subject manually with selections and a layer mask.

  1. Open your image with File → Open and keep the original file.
  2. Duplicate the image layer before editing.
  3. Use a selection tool to select the subject. Inspect the edges at a useful zoom level.
  4. Create a layer mask from the selection. If the wrong area is visible, invert the mask.
  5. Paint white on the mask to reveal areas and black to hide them. Use a softer brush for gradual edges.
  6. Hide any background layers and export a PNG to retain transparency. JPEG does not preserve transparency.

Check the exported image. Fine hair and low-contrast edges may need additional manual work.
